Going to College for students with disabilities like autism

July 28, 2016

Today, we’re going to start a series of what books you can use for reference when your child with special needs plans to go to college. There are many paths for students after graduating from high school such as going on to a post-secondary program or go off to college, but we will be placing the spotlight on the idea of going to college.

To start off, we need to know what kinds of colleges are in the US. There is a book out there that notes the names of 4 year colleges that support students with special needs.

2016 Four-Year Colleges 2016 (Peterson’s Four Year Colleges)

Since it’s publication, it has been noting many of the American colleges for fifty years. It is a very thick book, but it has detailed notes and information on each college. It will take a long time to read through the whole book, but before reading through every detail, skim through the book and look through the section that says “Special Study Option”. This section explains what kinds of services are provided for what kinds of special needs. For those who are interested in a school’s special needs program, contact their DSPS (Disabled Students Program and Services), DSP(Disability Services and Programs), Office of Accessible Education (OAE), or Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) for more information.

Some schools’ DSPS and DSP programs will have their own booth during open house sessions so please peak with them too if you find them.
